The Key Ring Jingle Check

Eventually the SURGE-1 will extend throughout your entire body. If you stand upright, very quiet, totally relaxed, and are able to initiate the ARC flow state of Fully Activated Body, then you should begin to spontaneously get the experience of the SURGE-1. Try standing upright and quiet, with your hands naturally dropped by your sides. Loop a ring of keys or a key chain over one finger, just loosely hooked over one bent finger of one hand. Without any physical initiation of motion whatsoever, just change your mind such that the SURGE-1 kicks in.

At that point, the keys should begin to jingle in your hand - without you applying any physical energy, deliberate motion, or conscious intent to your hand whatsoever. It’s crucial that your hand does not move independently in this state. This isn’t automatic writing! Nor is it a Kriya-style total physical freak-out (as covered in the section above on The Fallacies). The entire body is uniformly experiencing the same entrained SURGE-1 resonance. The SURGE-1 of your body as a whole creates a spontaneous light jingle in the keys you’re holding. This is the beginner’s first test of the basic form of the ‘real yang power’.

Atomic physicists have written that the binding energy liberated from splitting a single atom is about enough to pop a Ping-Pong ball half an inch up from a tabletop. Point being, a single atom doesn’t really have all that much energy. When you first begin to experience the SURGE-1 effect (the ‘real yang resonance’ in Sun’s terms), coincidentally that’s pretty much exactly the degree of kinetic energy you’ll feel internally – about enough to physically move a Ping-Pong ball or jingle a key ring. Just the little bounce of a Ping-Pong ball… but now imagine that internal energy pulse layered, re-combined, fed-back, and re-amplified many thousands of times over. The result in the case of nukes is obvious (Fat Man and Little Boy bombs). In the case of internal training it’s not so visually dramatic, but the same kind of combinatorics are at work. It may start soft and subtle, but you need to respect its amplification potential. Don’t kid yourself that you already understand this if you haven’t experienced it. It is totally different from any other kind of athletic and/or spiritual experience, yet at the same time not at all vague or speculative. It’s absolutely concrete.

The SURGE-1 resonance will recur many times at ever greater strength in the course of your Taiji training. It recurs in cycles of an ongoing tempering process. It isn’t a one-time level in a linear ordering. It’s not something to be attained once and for all and then left in the rearview mirror. But even though the SURGE-1 phenomenon isn’t a single straight progression, I think it’s useful to cover what you may experience the first time through.
